Not exactly a "workaround", but the last time this happened (Notes 7) I switched my Blackberry over to fully wireless sync.
It's MUCH better. Now I just plug my BB in to the USB for charging purposes; Dekstop Manager doesn't even start (I set it not to). I have not used Desktop Manager in the better part of a year now, and good riddance.
The only catch is that you have to sync your contacts with DWA becase the BES server picks them up from there, not from names.nsf.
To do that in Notes 8:
1. In Contacts->More->Preferences check the box for "Enable synchronization between your Mail file and local Contacts"
2. Go to Open->Replication and make sure the box for "Synchronize contacts" is checked.
That's all there is to it.
Question for IBM: In pre-8 Notes you could sync your contacts manually with Actions->Synchronize contacts from the Mail view. This seems to have gone away in Notes 8. Is there a way to do it manually (i.e., "sync them right now")?
